Professor Zhong Xin, a professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University, China, advocated dialogue on peaceful development as a strategy to advance the operational growth of the media.

Peaceful development is a strategic choice made by China to achieve modernization, make itself strong and prosperous, and contribute more to the progress of human civilization.

Zhong, a researcher on public diplomacy and crisis communication at China University, gave the advice in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Beijing.

She spoke on the sidelines of a conference titled “Vision, Goodwill and Credibility”, organized under the auspices of the 2022 Program of the China-Africa Press Center (CAPC).

Zhong said, “Media organizations need to tell more real stories about the importance of peaceful development.

“There is a need for media organizations to create adequate space for dialogue on peaceful development, to allow people to better understand the subject.

“When we talk about media, we are talking about different forms of communication; media organizations around the world should try to maintain this important strategy for promoting peace in conflict situations.

“We should lead the conversation on peace; we are not here to create war, but to create peace, understanding and bridges and with this mindset we will unravel stories and contribute to world peace.

The teacher said that when people understood the essence of peace, they embraced it or believed it, and could stimulate more cooperation.

According to her, global cooperation is possible when people understand the need to end wars and cooperate with each other for the common good.

She said steps have been taken to carry out a peace development project through partnership with media organizations in Nigeria and other parts of the world to achieve the goals.

“The project focuses on ways to publish stories and give people confidence in cooperation.

“If we have too many wars, too many conflicts with people, we will be hopeless; this is where dialogue has become a very important means of peaceful development.

“Now the online media situation is very fragmented, so how can we try to conduct the dialogue online and get people talking and being more rational?

“Sometimes online discussion can be quite irrational and become unrealistic,” she added.

She denounced the spreading of fake news over real news as a war that media organizations must conquer, to promote accuracy in reporting, trust and make people understand the topic of peace building.

“Fake news and real news are in competition, so we have to try to win in the battlefield of media operations.

“I think the media can do a lot to coordinate people through peaceful development dialogue so that people can have basic trust as we see today.

“If they trust China more, for example, they won’t trust false information about the country, so basic trust is very important in peaceful development.

“If they trust China more to have credibility in a specific area, fake news won’t work that much; that’s why we try to invite more people to come to China to see and understand Chinese culture and values,” she said.

No less than 90 journalists from 67 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific are taking part in the programme, which started in June.

The program, which is organized by the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA), is expected to end in November. (NOPE)
