Ephrata Public Library Talk Tank Provides Free and Easy Mental Health Service to All

EPHRATA, Pa. (WHTM) – There may be book shelves everywhere, from encyclopedias to self-help books, but Ephrata’s Public Library is much more than that these days. It is now the headquarters of the Talk Tank.

“It looks like an old phone booth, it’s soundproof, it’s lighted and the air is flowing,” said Kelly Ernst Warner, Northern Lancaster Hub coordinator.

It also helps to better connect people to get help that they might not otherwise have.

“It’s about I don’t know who to turn to for this. I feel very anxious about this thing in my life. I don’t want to ask my boss for help. I don’t want to ask, I want to ask my parents for help, ”Warner said.

It’s as easy as getting in, pushing a button, and logging in, and it’s completely anonymous. Once people step in, they are put in touch with a member of the WellSpan team, who can offer psychological support and then put them in touch with additional services.

Kelly Ernst Warner says making this innovation accessible to everyone was a priority.

“People don’t think little kids don’t have big problems. Sometimes people don’t think seniors have real problems after they retire, ”added Warner.

With COVID-19 putting mental health at the forefront and telehealth services taking off, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.

“To reach a whole community like this. it will change the way people view mental health, ”she said.
