Fire crew travel 275 miles to 32 stations for mental health charity
Firefighters and rescuers spent 21 hours cycling between 32 fire stations, raising thousands of pounds for a mental health charity.
Thirteen staff from the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) cycled the 275 miles between all the different stations, crossing North Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, East Rising and North East Lincolnshire on the 19th June.
Firefighter Paul Wainwright, who planned the trip, told the PA News Agency: “I am so proud of everyone for getting around.”
The 43-year-old, who lives in York and works in Scunthorpe, said the stations “have gone out of their way” to accommodate cyclists.
âThey were staging scenes to make their stations look good in our photos,â he said.
âThere were people in breathing apparatus, people on ladders and flying drones.
âIt made the day really enjoyable. When there is a group of guys waiting for you at a train station at midnight offering you Haribo, it’s a nice feeling because you know they are with you in spirit.
The group has now raised almost £ 5,000 for Hull and East Yorkshire Mind.
An avid cyclist who regularly participates in ultra-style events, Mr Wainright said the idea came about after discussions with the HFRS Head of Fitness.
He said: âWe talked and said it would be great to have a group to do it. Right away we knew we wanted to do it for mental health.
âWe’ve both had close friends or family who have needed help from mental health charities lately, so it’s close to home.
“I can’t claim to have suffered from mental health issues in the past year during the lockdown, but I fully understand why people have been and why it has been such a difficult year for everyone.”
The challenge was a repeat of a 1996 attempt, undertaken by seven members of the HFRS who cycled between 31 fire stations in 24 hours.
The group consisted of firefighters, a manager, control staff, support and retirees.
âIt just caught the imaginations of our workforce,â Mr. Wainright said.
