The Season 4 Episode 22 English Dub will stumble upon Funimation Sunday evening March 20. A representative from Funimation has confirmed to us that you can expect to see it at 9:30 p.m. Central/10:30 p.m. Eastern/8:30 p.m. Mountain/7:30 p.m. Pacific/3:30 a.m. UTC.

You can watch the English dub of episode 81 on Funimation at this link. (Or you can also get a free trial at this link.)

When you’re ready to watch, change the Funimation drop-down menu to Season 4. Each episode will have “English/Japanese” under the episode title (and other languages if available) once the dub is available. This allows you to choose between sub (Japanese) or dub. Once the new episode has “English” listed under the title, you’ll know the dub is available.

To watch the new episode, you will need a paid account. However, you can also get a free trial to test the platform.

The new dub released this week will not yet be on Hulu or Crunchyroll.

You can watch the dub on Toonami earlier if you have cable

Toonami always gets the English dub episode a few hours before Funimation, but you can only watch on Toonami if you have a cable or satellite subscription. According to Toonami’s schedule, Season 4 Episode 22 airs on TV at 12:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, March 20 (11:30 p.m. Central Time on Saturday night, March 19). If you have cable, look for it on a channel listed as Adult Swim/Cartoon Network/Toonami (all are names for the same channel.) Some regions may air it at a different time, so you’ll want to check your cable listings local to be sure.

If you want to stream Toonami without a cable subscription, it should also be available on Hulu Live TV, Sling TV, AT&T Now, and YouTube TV. (Note that this is Hulu with Live TV, do not the regular Hulu service. Hulu with Live TV is a more expensive premium service.)

You can see Toonami’s schedule here. Clicking the Attack on Titan link on Toonami will take you to the Adult Swim page here. Season 4 Episode 22 will be added at this link (likely after it airs on TV), but you’ll need a cable connection to watch.

Season 4 Episode 21 Refreshment

Here’s where we left off last week (spoilers below from last week!) For a full review, check out our S4E20 review and analysis here.

We finally learned the secret behind Founder Ymir’s story and how the Titans began. When Ymir was a child, living happily in her village and trying to be nice to everyone, the warmongering Eldian tribe destroyed her village and took all the inhabitants as slaves. They intermarried into the tribe and forced everyone into subjugation, led by the future King Fritz. When Ymir was wrongly blamed for the escape of a pig, the Eldians tried to kill her by hunting her like an animal. She fled into a tree, fell from the roots and into a tributary of water below. Inside was a parasitic, glowing spine that latched onto her and transformed her into the Founding Titan.

Even as a powerful Titan, Ymir allowed herself to continue serving as a slave to Fritz. She bore him three children and used her power to subjugate more people, including waging war against the neighboring Marleyan nation. (It is claimed that since she had never really experienced freedom as a child, she did not understand the concept of it and therefore could not free herself, even when she was powerful.)

She died throwing herself in front of a spear intended for King Fritz. He gave his body to his three children – Maria, Rose and Sina. We had to assume that these three acquired his powers (or some part of them), and then when their descendants ate them, that’s how we ended up with the nine sentient Titans.

Now Ymir lives beyond the Paths, still acting like a slave and building each Titan by hand with buckets full of sand.

In the present day, Zeke attempted to order Ymir to suppress the Eldians’ ability to reproduce. But Eren told her that she didn’t have to listen to anyone but herself and that he understood the message she sent him 2,000 years ago. She chose to give him the power of the Founder, and Eren emerged in a terrifying new form in the “real world”. He started the Rumbling and called all the Eldians on the Path with him to hear his message. He informed them that he planned to kill and destroy everyone outside the shores of Paradis, for only then would they be safe.
