Why so sad? x Nike SB Bruin High Release Date
From the outside, fandom and sneaker collecting may seem like a futile and financially absurd interest, but the medium has allowed brands and their collaborators to tell meaningful stories. The final example comes in the form of the Why So Sad? x Nike SB Bruin High.
Founded in 2016 by Scottish pro skateboarder John Rattray, Why So Sad? raised awareness and funds for mental health, suicide alert and prevention. Partly inspired by the tragic loss of his sister, Katrina, the initiative has seen Rattray do everything from bike 100 miles to dropping collaborative t-shirts to promote his mission to help those struggling with depression and other obstacles to their mental well-being. Although he previously worked with the New Balance Numeric team, the skater recently brought his creative and missionary input to Nike SB, via the Dunk Low and Bruin High silhouettes. This latest project retains similar designs to the old one, namely Rattray’s “Predatory Bird” logo and “WHY SO SAD?” messaging – but replaces the bold blues with a muted brown across the majority of the upper. Eye-catching yellow and blue provide contrast via laces and profile swooshes, respectively, while semi-translucent tan backdrops complete the mission-focused collaboration.
